Tutoring Program Extended
The hugely successful Time with Teacher tutoring program has received an additional year of funding from the Frank P. Pierce Foundation, guaranteeing children in Dade and Walker Counties free, quality tutoring through the FY24-25 school year.
The program in its current iteration was launched in July of 2023, thanks also to the Foundation. The purpose of the program is to help students who are at-risk for retention to receive additional after school help with their studies, as well as to be a resource for any student needing additional help to maintain or improve their current grades.
The program employs current and recently retired professional teachers, and has been thoroughly utilized. In the past six months, the program hosted over 1,300 one-hour tutoring sessions across four branch libraries in Dade and Walker County, far surpassing initial estimates of its usage.
"Most teachers I talk to all agree that students and teaching are different this year. Things that should be easier are so much harder. I know personally, I consistently work with students that are 2 grade levels below in reading. Math is also a struggle. This program allows for opportunities for families to get help with academics for struggling students. I can't say enough about this program," says one tutor.
